Born 1956 in Cheshire, England
Lives and works in Penpont, Scotland
Andy Goldsworthy (born 1956 in Cheshire, England) is one of the most influential land artists working today. Since the 1970s, he has created both ephemeral works and permanent, site-specific installations that explore the landscape around us.
Over a career spanning five decades, Goldsworthy has worked across sculpture, installation, photography, and film in both the landscape and in urban environments. At the age of 13, he began working as a farm labourer, an experience that would shape his close relationship with the landscape, physical labour, and materials such as stone, wood, and wool.
Goldsworthy’s practice encompasses both large-scale permanent installations in the form of walls, sheepfolds and cairns, and smaller, ephemeral works made of leaves, branches and ice. He uses materials sourced from the site where a work takes shape, drawing attention to the particular qualities of a place and the topography of the landscape. The process is central —time, patience, and his physical engagement with the materials are integral to the making of his works.
Goldsworthy’s permanent works can be found in institutions worldwide, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., the de Young Museum, San Francisco, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York, the Museum of Old and New Art, Hobart, Tasmania, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, United Kingdom, Jupiter Artland, United Kingdom, and Storm King Art Center, New Windsor, New York.
Since 2014, Goldsworthy has been working on his most extensive project to date, Hanging Stones, in the North York Moors in the United Kingdom. The project transforms nine existing stone buildings into works of art along a walking route extending more than six miles through the landscape.
Solo exhibitions of Goldsworthy’s work have been presented at several institutions, including Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Galleries of Scotland in the United Kingdom, Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Spain, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States and Skissernas Museum in Sweden. Goldsworthy has received numerous honorary degrees and international awards, most recently the Praemium Imperiale for Sculpture, the inaugural Dent in the Universe award to fund the realization of the project Gravestones, as well as the Sky Arts Exhibition of the Year Award 2026 for his exhibition Andy Goldsworthy: Fifty Years, Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh.
Goldsworthy is the Artist of the Year 2027 and his sculpture Stone Field is the eighth work in the Princess Estelle Sculpture Park. The acquisition of the sculpture has been made possible through a generous gift from the Förberg family. Stone Field is Goldsworthy’s first permanent public installation in the Nordic region, and will be inaugurated 2 June 2027.
